WHY: Jeff L. Rosenheim, curator of photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will present “In the Spirit: The Achievement and Legacy of Michael P. Smith” on Wednesday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. at The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal Street. The illustrated presentation will discuss the importance of Smith’s work as documentation of culture and why his excellence as a photographer is instrumental in that regard. While living in New Orleans in the early 1980s, Rosenheim worked closely with Michael P. Smith on the logistics of the “Spirit World” international tour, printing Smith’s negatives in his darkroom and managing his photograph booth at Jazz Fest. Considered the leading authority on Walker Evans, he has authored or co-authored eight books on the artist, including Walker Evans and the Picture Postcard (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2009).
Seating is limited for the presentation, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are suggested and may be made by calling (504) 523-4662 or by e-mailing wrc@hnoc.org.
This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith from The Historic New Orleans Collection, now on view at The Collection’s Royal Street complex More information about the exhibition is available at www.michaelpsmithphotography.com.
